WTFx23

 August 17

First day of class. So so weird, and so awesome. So I got to my classroom early to check out the equipment and the door was locked so the first thing I had to do was call the police to get the doors open. Then I tried to get the computer started and it took forever to load my profile. Then I had to connect the USB with my power points and it was only the third USB port that worked. Then it turned out that Teams was not downloaded on that computer so I had to do that and ask some students in the class (mixed f2f and online) to post to the teams group why I was not showing and THEN I could not make the sound work - I could see the students and they could see and hear me but I could not hear them. So we had to have one of the students in the room keep track of the chat and read chat posts out loud. But we did and it worked and we learned things and it is such a magical thing and I am so, so very grateful that I get to do this thing.

Grad team meeting about a bit of everything - I need to make a survey for current students. Met with Kendra who is very sweet but is becoming obviously mercenary. Some stress at the house, very fragile ... Micro Center for another hard drive for J and then  Chicfila and the second half of a Pale Horse. Scott Padgett says we have two hurricanes heading toward the coast - landing in New Orleans and Houston ... DFW, he says, is under the cone of uncertainty ... yeah, well, we have been under a cone of uncertainty since February ..

August 22

Wrote Michael - and then added that I realized I had the wrong day. Called Inger and got the details of the funeral - awesomely beautiful apparently. Jim met with the twins and I sat on the ground with a very scared dog who did not bite me, although I thought she might several times. Phew. The horses too were good to meet again. Lunch at Railhead, pie at Emporium. Drove through Cedar Springs and saw the rainbow crosswalks. The Quick and the Dead. Half of a Campion.

Talked with Rachel about Milton. Later Annika about life. We went out and did some stuff and did not get food at jollibee chicken, but instead ate at Tacodeli ... which was okay. Sex and laundry and the second half of a Campion and John Oliver and I took my medicine a bit early - yeah. Nervous about class.

22 WFT and counting

 August 10

Daily meeting a bit subdued. I tried bringing up the layoffs, but Nils came on at that moment to talk about the fall semester. Not even .... full full day that was only done at 8 when I had finally sent out the TA orientation invite. Phew. Before that an hour with the National Black Student Organization with speakers from Skye Jackson to her grandpa to so many wonderful faculty and students bearing witness and support. A treasure.

WFT turns 21 - how is that possible?

August 3

Started the day with over a hundred email. Ended it with less than 30. Alice was welcoming and it was nice to be back. Talked with A this morning - some real serious stress there, physical pain and bad emotional reaction to the cortizone, makes people so aggressive. Had a nice lunch from Taco Bell and then asked for indian food for dinner - Jamie was there and it was so very nice to see her! Last episode of "I'll be gone in the dark" Such a powerful love story, story about obsession, survival, fear, and grit.

August 4

Lots to do but I did make progress. Ended with only 15 emails. Stomach upset and angry and me a little feverish (99.7 as opposed to my usual 97.7). Had a nice long conversation w the brother. I am so privileged. They are doing well, even talking about bringing mom over later on. I think she would like that. Couldn't find anything to watch so ended up with Kristen Bell Momsplaining - hilarious.

August 5

The official long day. Comet giving day - gave to the library, the comet cupboard, and A&H. Fever down and stomach better, but still a bit weak. My oxygen is good though and I think I will be just fine. Jim found Chimay red so we got that after work. Playing Rock the Casbah and Sometimes it snows in April in my head. I wonder what Tracey would say if he was with us still and I am glad that Cecelia is not, but I strangely miss her. She was obnoxious in so many ways, but she cared deeply for her friends. In September 20 million people will become homeless in the US. Schools cannot, should not open, but students will not learn from a shelter.

I panicked for a bit, but I figured out that it is my job to keep the faith. I cannot fix the world but I can hold out for goodness and joy. People made music in the camps, dammit, and I can hold steady.

Another long day. Got to talk to mom for 10 minutes. Needed work on the TA orientation. Put together a side table for me. Tony back from the hospital and much better and stronger - they don't know why, but we are grateful

August 7

My godfather died yesterday - choked on a bun at the hospital. Several of my co-workers got RIFed - scared, angry, and sad that my world is not safe and they are hurting.
So much past running through my head as I go, the peppermint tea took me to Paris and the cafe and the arabic center, Eurythmics takes me back to everywhere. Driving in the car with Jim takes me back to being little and going with dad to assignments where he would work and I would sleep in the car.

August 8

Absence - the pandemic shows up in absence, of companies leaving blank windows behind when they go out of business, of people leaving a gaping hole when they are RIFed, of whole parts of your life going blank when someone dies. Absence - the void is terrifying and it leaves the web of your world unraveled.
Talked to Inger today and I know now where the funeral will be and where he will be buried. I can see it on Google earth and pull up pictures of the church and surroundings.
Worked hard to figure out the syllabus and recording and stuff and Rachel called at ten to say she will not be ready for Milton in the morning. She calmed me down and helped me prioritize. I love her.

August 9

A fair bit of cleaning of paperwork from the nook. Move the stuff around in the book shelf so we could move the chair back in front of the book shelf. Moved the safe. All in all - progress. For the rest I talked to mom and to Jonas and the kids (who wanted to see the refrigerator where luckily there were pictures of them!) Class prep and more class prep - eek. Some stuff for SSEMWG that was panicky at first - lost the password and had no record and took a while before I got the idea right, but I think I did it.
I realize how little I write about politics - because it is even scarier than death. There is no longer a shared sense of good will.

20 weeks of wtf

July 27

Jim was ready to go and I dragged my feet a little. We got the bicycle rack put  together but I had to stop for a phone conference about new ICE requirements. Picked up the mail and mom's package with candy and books and a cookbook. Had lunch (Chickfilet) at Legacy Park in Arlington and then went for a bike ride there. Started a new book together - number five of Davenport, but the first one for me in the series. Answered emails and tried to organize a bit. Talked to my brother who was happy to get ot walk on the golf course. Dinner on the remaining barbecue and some SNL. I am wondering if isolation is easier on old people with a lot of internal life going, but harder because we don't have as much time left and life might pass us by - - the sense of loss grows heavier because so many things are getting to be too late and we feel the window closing?

July 28

Talked to Sinikka, talked to mom. Did a couple of hours of work, then lunch at In-n-Out and a lamp from Office Depot and some beads from Michaels. We tried to get a safe but the sales clerk just said they are expensive and he did not have any on the floor. Short nap and then dinner with Ad Astra. Throat hurt and some muscle ache - Jim coughing. Scared for a while and vertigo, that feeling when you go all the way down the drain thinking about what could happen ... then I felt better and we watched some SNL.

July 29

Looked at and then went and bought a safe and then a dolly and then got it upstairs, all 100 lbs of it. Fell apart watching Grantchester. Anger and frustration at all the bad and stupid and unfairness and fear. Made a promo for the Comet Cupboard

July 30

Did my hours at the Cupboard. Worked with Megan. Lots of people there so steady work. Herman Cain died and I mixed him up with Ben Carson ... ah well. Checked my mail (Kevin let me in through the Founders door) and the office was open so I locked it and went up to check with Michael. Had a nice long chat. Not sure how to bring happy.

Went to buy an end table at Ikea. They were out so we went to get the mail. Ordered koozies online and looked at tables on Amazon. Figured out how to re-code the safe - turns out we had received the wrong manual. Much easier with the right instructions.

July 31

Took a while and I talked to my godmother who is so good at doing well and enjoying and making the most of things .... we finally got out and then went to IKEA and got a table (hmm) and then to Joe Pool Lake and had lunch and went in the water and it was gorgeous. Then home and Jim dropped me at the park and I walked home and listened to Marianne Faithful and the Waterboys and cried in overwhelm at the memories of all the times I was so excited, when I went to San Fransisco and it was cool and weird and so much I did not understand but I found John Miles and Fisherman's Wharf and I knew the world was out there waiting walking in New York (coz of Arthur's Theme) and the feeling of the seventies and feeling old because there are so many echoes ... and then we crashed and got pizza and watched midsummer murder and sat together.

August 1

We must have gotten up ... and had breakfast. Then it took a while but we got out and down to the car with our bicycles and parked at a Starbucks off Forest and then rode the trail to Northwood Park, almost exactly a mile and a half. Rested a bit and then rode back. After some stress we ended up going to Klyde Warren Park for lunch - I had a serious salad with kale, spinach, shredded pear, walnuts, feta, cranberries (well, they were out) and carrots (instead of cranberries). Yum. Ended with Italian ice and then home past Albertsons for milk. Lazy afternoon, got a nap and some intimacy and silly games and then watched Aquaman with pizza. Some scenes were cute, but most of it was just silly.

Ben called when we were headed for the park and just wanted to chat - they bought a new car for Kerri and Jonathan got a dog, a golden retriever.
Cut the claws of the cats - Nietschze was annoyed, Sigmund panicked.

August 2

Milton - book 8, line 215. We are motoring through, slowly but inexorably. Went to the lake again - with Lauri this time. Spent about two hours and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Took the coffee table back and had a run in with  a maskless man and his angry wife. I very gently asked him to put on the mask he was carrying but not wearing, and he started by asking me if I worked there ... she called me a trouble maker ... Jim got involved and the whole thing degenerated into name calling. Bleah.

Came home, crashed, talked to mom and did laundry. Had dinner and watched episodes four and five of "I will be gone in the dark" and I lost it when Michelle died. These overdoses are so hopelessly useless and maddening.

19 WTF and going strong - mad - tired

July 21

We took a nap and there was so much I remembered, stories I was going to share of times and things and people and they were so vivid in my mind and now they are gone. One of the things is Middlemarch - Dorothea who really was a saint, living a small life, but bringing good to the world, changing the fabric of reality around her. Trying to think of a way to tell MW that he matters, that he underestimates his influence on the world. Talked to Jonas who is doing okay, although C is still so very anxious. He got to do Walmart curbside pickup though - out of the house, so that is good.

Remember to breathe, remember you are just a tiny thing, remember to love.

July 22

I just caught myself thinking that I would pray for someone ... never thought that before ... just sending good wishes for them out into the aether ... Talked with some really good students today, and they give me hope ... you know ... long term.

Dinner from Chickfilet that we ate in the car in the park. Then I did a short walk and Jim waited in the truck and then we went home. The Borgias - better than I thought.

Talked to mom for a bit. Left the house at three and went for a bike-rack and then to get the mail and then dinner from Rosa's at Lauri's. Some stress along the day. Talked w L about how we have not solved our Sudokus lately. There is a fog over everything.
Also, I should write about how we are bad at listening, just riffing on each others stories to tell our own. I tell a story to make a point. He hears the story but has his own point to make. I feel not heard.

July 26

Rachel and I started book 8. Talked about how hard it is to set boundaries with other people - even when it might kill you not to do so. Talked with Annika - T is hurting and doesn't always say so. Doctor's screwed up giving medication that gives you an ulcer without giving the ulcer medication. People are human - yeah, but no. Can you be mad at someone who is really sick or do they always get to win? Building a desk for your partner, what a labor of love.
Sex, Terry Black, walk on the park bridge. Aeon Flux (20 minutes was all we could stand), and then episode one of Saturday Night Live. Brilliant.

WTF 18

July 13

......Got the Yukon to the Carmax for repairs. Got some people written to, got some food, got my bra tag taken off and pizza for dinner. Talked to Jonas while we were at the store - told him I was worried about him and missed him. He sent a chicken recipe and said he got a radio for mom. Good for her to have.
Watched the first episode of Chernobyl - chillingly factual and insane. Just like now, just like here. Lies so commonplace that the truth becomes hard to recognize. That is the fear.

Called Sinikka - wrote Jan. Lots of registration stuff and NSA meetings. Saw Whitney Cummings. Very funny. Had reversed the numbers of my LOFT order from 2328 to 2823 ... the recipient found me on Facebook and texted me.

Read in my book a little - she is moving time and things around as you do when you think and walk and remember in all directions at once. And the internal emotional reality gets mixed up with the external reality and what does it really matter if what you see is a painting or a person - afterwards you remember it the same or similarly. Reminded of Luanne Frank's suggestion that we not stop at the things we understand and recognize, but focus and spend time with the things that do not make sense, that do not resonate.
Simone Dinnerstein - circles - is like hearing Bach in technicolor from inside his head, pulsing, swirling, five dimensional, hot and heavy. A bit of a revelation.
Talked to mom for a while. She is overweight and out of breath, but of good cheer. I hope she gets her medicine figured out soon.
Cleaned out the pantry and went to In 'n Out for lunch and then to Container Store where there were too many people and we got some stuff but I got overwhelmed and a little panicky with people being too close. Put everything back in the pantry and watched four episodes of Doc Martin and had tuna.

Thinking about how to build bridges to the Trumpers, so they have a safe way from the sinking ship to shore. So they can abandon the cult and find capital useful outside of Donnyland. We have to help with that.

Got the mail. Took a nap. Watched three episodes of I'll be gone in the Dark which is gripping and a great love story. and then vacuumed and did some laundry and then went for a walk while Jim talked to Kim and it was nice as it always is to be out, to walk, to talk to the trees, and see the people. Then two episodes of Tudors.

WTF continues - edition 17

July 6

I dunno. Days not have any structure. I wobble from thing to thing, always kinda on my way to later. Not enough sleep, but we did go out on the bicycles. Ordered jeans.  ICE came out with new rules about international students. Watched Sunset with Bruce Willis and James Garner.

Met  Magda on campus, took her picture and she cut my hair. Tried to go to the doctor, but didn't have an appointment. Another episode of Foyle's War - eerie similarities. They were waiting for a German invasion. Both of us were unnerved by the hypervigilance displayed by the shows characters.

Comet Cupboard with Sydney - Nils did the afternoon. Sent out the results of the TA survey. Remember that I had something last night I wanted to say. Maybe about the demons we are all fighting and do not know about - as in, we do not talk to each other, we shadow box, constantly. I saw it this morning in teh woman at the cash register who wondered what was wrong with me - nothing. I had been polite and friendly but she was paranoid and then she said it was all bad and God would sort it out. Outside a man came to take care of my cart and said another woman had told him to go away, to not come near her. His feelings were hurt. People are afraid again. So close to the surface.

Rachel hadn't read but we had a nice talk anyway. She told me about Axel and the flirty girl and different perspectives. Dry cleaners, frontline (vectra) for the cats, post office, Lauri to see her new car, Macy's for a bra and Michaels for rocks. A lovely nap. A silly Sherlock Holmes movie, Murder by Decree.

July 12

We did our taxes! Took all day, but we did 'em. and then I get ready to prepare for another week. Week eighteen. The fog intensifies. Yesterday we were all out and around people and today totally isolated. Someone said last week it will be January before we are back at work - I cannot imagine what the world will look like by then. It would be wonderful to inaugurate a new President with other people, but getting my hopes up for either is scary.

Florida's numbers are getting scary high and suddenly it becomes a reality that my brother - or his kids -  might get sick, might die. Or the Minnesotans or the FortWortheans ... so

My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I'd need so many people
